描述
I am a high school Spanish teacher, but my Spanish is nowhere near native fluency. Another teacher suggested I try this site to help improve my Spanish.
My father, though not latino, was a lover of all things Central American because he lived and worked there for many years in his 20s. So I grew up hearing him speak to me in Spanish, though never enough for me to learn it well.
Then when I was 6 we moved to Mexico, but only for about a year. I went to first grade there, and learned to be fluent in Spanish but only to the level of a six year old.
Later, back in the US, I studied Spanish in junior high and high school, always for the easy A.
In college I took two semesters of German in a total immersion model.
Then in my 20s I lived for a couple of years in Italy, and so Italian became by far my strongest foreign language. Although my Italian is rusty now, it still shows up in weird places when I speak Spanish. For example, I can never quite remember which language has 'albero' and which language has 'arbol' for the word tree. Also, the word 'ma' always comes out easier than 'pero.'
I majored in English and minored in Italian, and ultimately I became an English teacher. I loved that, but then I got a cancer diagnosis around the same time a position opened up for a Spanish teacher super part-time. That was good for me in the circumstances, so I took it. I was actually surprised they hired me all bald and emaciated as I was. But it turned out to be the perfect fit.
Fortunately I beat the disease, but the position grew with me and now I've been teaching it full time for over a decade. I only recently achieved my official credential to teach Spanish (before that I had a special designation for foreign language in general because of all the Italian and German I had taken in college). I have never actually taken a college course in Spanish, and I have never lived as an adult in a Spanish speaking country, although I have visited Costa Rica, Spain and Mexico multiple times.
I want to increase my fluency! I wish very much I could live in a Spanish speaking country to achieve that, but right now it is not feasible. Help a girl out?
